The Low Carbon Buildings Programme is part of a Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) initiative to bring forward the demonstration and deployment of  carbon energy and energy efficiency technologies.  As part of this initiative a grant system has been extended via the DECC  to homeowners and businesses  to encourage the installation of microgeneration technologies such as solar panels and renewable energy heat pumps.

Invariably strict guidelines need to be met by both the purchaser and the installation company :

Installation Company Requirements

Only installations undertaken by installers qualified and approved through the Microgeneration Certification Scheme - using specific manufacturer certified products  - such as Blueflame Services - qualify for helping the purchaser get an official grant payment.

Do be aware of companies who offer to discount systems by a sum equal to the grant. It is likely to mean that they are not accredited and have not undertaken the extensive procedure to ensure quality and design criteria are met to the standards the government are seeking for such installations. Further the cost of the system may be higher through an unaccredited company to compensate for additional expenditure they may have to meet.

Grants are paid directly to the homeowner or business purchaser by the issuing body - and not via a discount from the installer.

Homeowner Requirements

Before applying, the DECC require that you carry out a number of energy efficiency measures to your property or premises.
These are that you have :

  • Insulated the loft of the property to meet current building regulations. (270mm of mineral wool or suitable alternative)
Loft insulation  - In an uninsulated home a quarter of your the heat is lost through the roof. Click link to find out more)

  • Installed cavity wall insulation (if you have cavity walls)
Cavity wall insulation - a third of all the heat in an uninsulated home is lost through the walls. Click link to find out more

  • Fitted low energy light bulbs in all appropriate light fittings.
Energy saving light bulbs - did you know that inefficient light bulbs are being phased out ! Click link to find out for mor

  • Installed basic energy controls for your heating system - to include a room thermostat and a programmer or timer
Heating / energy controls - a full set of controls is as important as having the right kind of boiler. Click link to read more

  • Planning permission  - Guidelines have been altered to make permitted developments a lot simpler. Click link to read more.
