    When British Gas engineers Kevin Bull and Tony Schatten established Blue Flame (Colchester) Limited in 1987, their vision was a very simple one: to do the best job at a fair price. Their open and honest approach to running the business, coupled with their dedication to providing a truly value-for-money service, has proven to be a successful one and their vision is still going strong.


    There are now 5 Directors and 60 local people employed by Blueflame; working across two sites - their Head Office in Colchester and the second being a dedicated Local Authority contract base in Hadleigh, Suffolk. With the exception of the office support staff, they are all qualified engineers, and in this respect the company is fairly unique. Whether you need a small domestic repair, or a large commercial installation you’ll only deal with a specialist, there are no salesmen or saleswomen.


    Whilst experience is important to Blueflame, so is investing in young people who are interested in their industry. They run an apprenticeship scheme to help them develop their skills, realise their potential and embark on their career.

      Heating your home without spending a fortune on your energy bill is a challenge we all face these days, and boilers account for around 55% of that bill.


      Replacing an old gas boiler with an A-rated high-efficiency condensing boiler and upgrading your heating controls, including thermostatic radiator valves, could save you as much as £310 a year. If a new boiler isn’t the plan for now, then you should make sure yours is serviced regularly as an inefficient boiler wastes money.

      Check your radiators too. If they are becoming slow to heat up, have cold spots or are making a knocking sound, there could be a blockage and their efficiency could be reduced by as much as 15%. The blockage is usually caused by sludge and scale which can sometimes build up in the radiators of older heating systems, preventing the water from successfully circulating. This can be removed by a flushing process (usually known as a Powerflush); chemical inhibitors are added to prevent sludge and scale reforming and slowing down the rate of corrosion. With your radiators working more efficiently, you’ll save even more money on your energy bills.

      Your boiler’s working hard 24/7, but it’s important that all that hard work isn’t lost by having a poorly insulated hot water cylinder. Properly insulated cylinders prevent heat escaping, keeping your hot water at the right temperature for longer, so it’s there when you need it. Upgrading your hot water cylinder can save you around £45 a year.


      Unvented hot water cylinders are now the most popular option for new hot water systems. As they are fed directly from the mains water supply, the hot water flow rate is excellent and is delivered at mains pressure to every tap and showerhead in the home.


      Vented cylinders are connected by a pipe to the cold water tank, usually in the loft, and often need a pump to boost the flow rate around the property. The pump uses electricity, and may prove an expensive alternative to an unvented cylinder.

      Blueflame specialise in the design, installation and integration of all types of microgeneration technology heart pumps. Also solar thermal and solar PV panels and biomass boilers.


      Blueflame are certified to instal renewable energy systems under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) a quality assurance standard backed by the UK Government. Only by using an MCS approved installer will you qualify for any Government incentive.


      The energy we use in our homes is responsible for a quarter of our total carbon dioxide emissions - more than either transport or industry - and the cost of that energy keeps rising, making our utility bills a major household expense. Renewable energy, on the other hand, is not only cheaper, it helps lower harmful emissions too. Thanks to UK Government incentives, such as the Feed-in Tariffs scheme (FITs) and Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), using renewable energy technologies can also earn you a tax-free index-linked income, so you can lower your bills and makes some money.

      Renewable energy heating from the air or earth

      There are three kinds of heat pump: air-to-air, air-to-water and ground source.

      • The air-to-air system produces warm air which is circulated by fans to heat your home; it can also be used for cooling in warmer weather.
      • The air-to-water system distributes heat via your radiators or underfloor heating system and also heats your hot water
      • The ground source system uses pipes which are buried in the garden to extract heat from the ground to heat radiators, underfloor or warm air heating systems and your hot water.

      The most commonly used heat pumps are air-to-water as they are simple to install and require little maintenance. They are an economical replacement to oil fired, coal and electric central heating, and a boon if you don’t have mains gas. And, as you won’t need a boiler, it frees up space in the home too. (Although electricity is needed to power the pump, extracting the heat from the outside air, a limitless renewable resource, even in temperatures as low as -15°C, far outweighs the cost of the electricity.) Ground source heat pumps are the most energy efficient but, due to the cost and complexity of installation, are better suited to new build.


      Not only will a heat pump reduce your energy bill and your carbon footprint, domestic installations of both air-to-water and ground source heat pumps are eligible for Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments

      Solar water heating systems, or solar thermal panels, use free heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water. A conventional boiler or immersion heater can be used to make the water hotter, or to provide hot water when solar energy is unavailable. A well designed system can provide your household with 60% of your hot water needs.


      Also by using an approved company such as Blueflame - who also use approved 'microgeneration' technologies you will qualify for the UK Government Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments.

      Solar PV panel systems convert the daylight hitting the panels on your roof into electricity, to power your appliances during the day. By using a solar electricity panel system you’ll also be paid for all the electricity that you generate under the UK Government Feed-in Tariffs Scheme (FITs)


      With its excellent return on investment, solar PV has captured the nation’s imagination and many householders have been taking advantage of these systems. As long as your property has a south, east or west facing roof, your solar panels will generate electricity during daylight hours. Your energy provider will pay you for the electricity generated for a period of 20 years; this payment is tax-free and index-linked and, if you don’t use it all, it’s exported back into the National Grid and you get paid even more.

      Biomass is the biological material produced from living or recently living organisms like trees, animals and waste and this material can be used as fuel. A biomass boiler, burning wood pellets or logs, provides a safe and environmentally sound heating solution whether you want to heat your home or a large industrial facility. And, as burning biomass emits the same amount of carbon dioxide as was absorbed by the plants while growing, it’s carbon neutral.


      It’s economical too as the cost of the fuel is much lower than that of coal, gas or oil. In fact a biomass boiler could save you nearly £600 a year on energy bills when compared to an electric heating system. For properties in rural or off-mains gas areas, it’s the most cost-efficient form of heating there is.

    Our website is based on a content management system hosted by Strikingly LLC in the USA – and the data capture from our contact form is securely retained by them as a back-up as well as forwarded to our company contact email address.
